Learning & Development

Young children learn and develop through play, by actively investigating, exploring. We support the children in our care to embrace opportunities to express themselves creatively, using their imaginations and developing their own ideas and confidence in their choices.

Our setting uses the EYFS guidance to plan and provide varied learning opportunities linked to each of the 7 areas of the curriculum, these opportunities are developed from our observations and assessments of each of the children.

Activities are linked to the children’s interests, fostering and building on their curiosity, skills and understanding. Some of these activities will be child-led, and in others an adult takes the lead in helping children take part.

We are committed to the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage – this is the national guidance for working with children from birth to five

We provide children of all ages the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge across as many areas of learning as possible.

“Activities are challenging but achievable, ensuring children remain confident and motivated.
Staff have an extensive understanding of what each child is to gain from the range of spontaneous or planned activities”

Embracing the natural world

We have created our own woodland classroom area just a short walk away from the Nursery.

Our staff have level 2 and 3 Forest School qualifications and provide weekly Forest School sessions on Wednesdays.

We love cooking on our rocket stove or fire, building dens in the wood, creating woodland creatures from materials we find and exploring nature around us.

We also run ad hoc Forest School days for children who don’t attend on Wednesdays so that they also get to experience forest school activities, for example trips to Friday Street woods and stream.

We aim to evoke the children’s sense of wonder and excitement in actively engaging with the natural world, taking responsibility in risk assessing and caring for their environment.
